2021 Travel Team Member Feature: Abigail Derby
We are excited to continue our new blog series! In this series, we highlight members of our incredible 2021 Travel Team who will accompany us during Mission 2021 to Antigua, Guatemala.
Travel Team Members generously volunteer their time, talent, and energy toward our goal; providing the gift of mobility to patients in need. From October 2nd through October 9th 2021, we will be in Antigua to accomplish that goal.
This year’s trip to Antigua will be our sixth to Guatemala, and our eleventh trip overall. We thoroughly enjoy the time we spend at Obras Sociales del Santo Hermano Pedro, our partner hospital in Antigua, which we affectionately call our home away from home. We love the staff there and truly think of them all as family.
Let’s turn our attention to our next featured Travel Team Member, Abigail Derby! Abigail is a graduate of Chatham University and Duquesne University, where she received a biology degree and a nursing degree, respectively. Her education led her to the professional role that she enjoys today, a registered nurse in an operating room. She continues to be challenged and endeared by her career and finds meaning and fulfillment in the patients she cares for. Abigail’s nursing experience is very valuable to Operation Walk Pittsburgh. It, along with her commitment to and personal connections she creates with the patients she cares for will make her an important member of our Travel Team!
A Pittsburgh native, Abigail thoroughly enjoys all of the events that the city hosts throughout the year. She particularly enjoys North Park, where she likes to jog along the river there and play tennis for exercise. In addition, Abigail likes to spend her free time using her Peloton Bike. She also enjoys crafting projects and spending time with her family.
All of our Travel Team Members work hard to meet a fundraising goal, helping to cover a portion of the total cost of critically needed supplies and equipment for Mission 2021. We are deeply thankful for each and every one of our Travel Team Members’ support, including Abigail’s!
“I have been looking for the right group to do a mission trip with for years. I feel blessed to be given certain skills that I use in my career and feel called to utilize them in a volunteer aspect. I got connected to the group from my unit director. I am on the ortho team at my facility so it was a perfect fit. I am most excited to meet the patients and be a part of their journey to receive a total joint replacement. ” - Abigail
Please consider making a donation in Abigail’s name to support her fundraising commitment. Remember, 100% of all donations made to Operation Walk Pittsburgh directly support patient care during the mission. Will you help Abigail reach her fundraising goal?
