2021 Travel Team Member Feature: Dr. Roger Componovo
We are excited to continue our new blog series! In this series, we highlight members of our incredible 2021 Travel Team who will accompany us during Mission 2021 to Antigua, Guatemala.
Travel Team Members generously volunteer their time, talent, and energy toward our goal: providing the gift of mobility to patients in need. From October 2nd through October 9th 2021, we will be in Antigua to accomplish that goal.
This year’s trip to Antigua will be our sixth to Guatemala, and our eleventh trip overall. We thoroughly enjoy the time we spend at Obras Sociales del Santo Hermano Pedro, our partner hospital in Antigua, which we affectionately call our home away from home. We love the staff there and truly think of them all as family.
Let’s turn our attention to our next featured Travel Team Member, Dr. Roger Componovo! Roger is an experienced orthopedic surgeon who specializes in hip and knee replacements. After completing his B.S. in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina, Roger went on to medical school at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, followed by his orthopedic surgery residency at the Medical University of South Carolina. He also spent a year completing a hip and knee replacement fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania from 2007-2008. Since then, he has been practicing orthopedic surgery and plans to bring his valuable experience to Antigua, Guatemala, with Operation Walk Pittsburgh in October.
Roger is a Delaware native, but now lives in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. His father is a Vietnam veteran and flew in the Air Force. Growing up, Roger was very dedicated to the sports that he played. It was a combination of his passion for sports and seeing the incredible impact that a joint replacement had on his mother that led him to a career in orthopedics.
Outside of the operating room, Roger likes to say that he and his wife have another job as an Uber driver for their four children. Dr. and Mrs. Componovo are heavily involved in their children’s lives, especially in the realm of athletics. Roger currently coaches the softball, basketball, and soccer teams that his children play on. For exercise, Roger and his family enjoy mountain biking in the summer and skiing in the winter. When they have some free time as a family, they thoroughly enjoy vacationing to the Jersey Shore, where Roger occasionally hops on a surfboard!
All of our Travel Team Members work hard to meet a fundraising goal, helping to cover a portion of the total cost of critically needed supplies and equipment for Mission 2021. We are deeply thankful for each and every one of our Travel Team Members’ support, including Roger’s!
“It takes me out of my comfort zone and challenges me to travel to a foreign land. At the same time, I am able to change someone's life who may never have access to the same treatment. It is the reason I became a surgeon in the first place. In the United States, people have tremendous access to hip and knee replacement surgery. I feel much more needed on Operation Walk Pittsburgh’s missions because we are giving patients a treatment that they would normally not receive.” - Roger
Please consider making a donation in Roger’s name to support his fundraising commitment. Remember, 100% of all donations made to Operation Walk Pittsburgh directly support patient care during the mission. Will you help Roger reach his fundraising goal?
